Herefordshire College of Technology "Success for our Students"

Herefordshire College of Technology is situated in one of the most beautiful Cathedral Cities in the UK. Only an hour away from Birmingham International Airport yet close to the mountains and coast of Wales, there's plenty to discover in the surrounding areas.

The County of Herefordshire is characterised by interesting Market Towns and pretty black-and-white villages, and the City itself is built around the 11th Century Cathedral, which houses the world-famous Mappa Mundi and Chained Library.

HCT's main campus is within a few minutes walk of the City centre and close to the railway and central bus terminus.

With over 9,000 students enrolling every year, the college is a popular choice for locals and for those travelling from afar. A wide range of courses are on offer with something to suit everyone, including:

Facilities on site include a well-stocked Learning Resources Centre, which as well as thousands of books and electronic learning materials, offers each student access to a PC with Internet and printing facilities. There is also a choice of venues to eat at on campus including the College's Cider Orchard Restaurant, managed by our own catering and hospitality students.

HCT has close links with specially chosen UK Universities to enable progression to further degree courses. Careful attention is given to student support - particularly important for students coming from abroad.

All of your student needs are catered for by the Student Services Team, who can offer help and guidance on a whole variety of issues from accommodation and financial advice to language support and confidential counselling.

The college has been awarded many accolades to date, including 'Highly Commended' in the UK National Beacon Awards and 'Investor in People'. In a recent inspection by UK Government Inspectors, some of the key strengths were identified as:

Good attainment by most adult students,
Good vocational skills in construction, professional studies and rural crafts,
Good teaching in construction, IT courses for adults, humanities and foundation courses,
Effective additional support in literacy and numeracy, and
Focus of staff development on improving teaching and learning.

Students at HCT identified the following as things they liked about the college:

Well organised practical work,
Good additional learning support,
Friendly, respectful treatment from staff,
Provision of IT and learning resources,
Good student support.

If you are thinking about joining HCT, the people of Herefordshire will give you a warm welcome. They are known for their friendly character and the County itself has one of the UK's lowest crime rates, making it a safe place to live and study.

Living costs are generally lower than in many parts of the UK and there are good local amenities, including restaurants, shops and leisure facilities.

  Student Profile

One student who decided to join HCT is Wendy Luk from Hong Kong. Wendy says, "The College has very good facilities such as a library, computers for everyone, a canteen, restaurant, nursery and a friendly campus environment. I used the computers at college to complete my final 3,500-word project.

The teachers are very skilled, and if I had a language problem, they were there to help and encourage me at anytime. The students were also so kind and friendly".

Wendy studied for the Associated Accounting Technician Intermediate (NVQ Level 3) and Technician stage (NVQ Level 4), and decided to stay on in Hereford after passing her course. She now works as a Management Accounts Assistant for a County Hospital in the City.

Wendy's dream job is to become a qualified accountant and she plans to continue her studies with a CIMA course. She sums up her time at Herefordshire College of Technology as "Very enjoyable. I now have more confidence and my AAT qualification gives me the opportunity to apply for more responsible jobs and study further.

Thanks to Herefordshire College of Technology I managed to complete two years of studying without losing interest and motivation, and I achieved a first time pass result!"
