The institute for System Level Integration (iSLI) is a collaborative venture of four of the UK’s leading universities – Edinburgh, Glasgow, Heriot-Watt and Strathclyde. It is located in a modern business park in the new town of Livingston, close to Scotland’s two major cities, Edinburgh & Glasgow.
iSLI offers two postgraduate courses; the one-year full-time Masters (MSc) in System Level Integration (also available as a part-time and distance learning course), and the Engineering Doctorate (EngD) in System Level Integration, a PhD-level research programme lasting four years. Successful graduates of both programmes are awarded a joint degree of the four partner universities.
iSLI’s academic programmes receive financial support from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), Scottish Funding Council (SFC) and industry. iSLI’s funding is underpinned by a financial commitment from Scottish Enterprise, Scotland’s economic development agency. iSLI invites eligible students to pursue postgraduate studies, taught by prominent academics and mentored by professional engineers
MSc
The MSc in System Level Integration is designed specifically for graduates in electronic engineering, computer science, physics and other relevant disciplines. The MSc concentrates on the understanding of the process of system level design, the use of IP blocks and the architecture of modern electronic systems. It combines both the hardware and software (embedded software) aspects of integrated electronic systems.
The course is modular in structure, with credit awarded for each successfully completed module. The content of the MSc covers a range of compulsory core topics in electronic systems design engineering to be taken by all students and a number of optional topics. Each module is typically delivered on a half-day per week basis at iSLI’s purpose built premises in Livingston. The MSc culminates in the submission of an industrial or academic dissertation. Students successfully completing the taught modules, but unable to conduct a project, will be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma (Pg DIP) in System Level Integration.
EngD
The Engineering Doctorate (EngD) is the flagship doctoral qualification of the government-funded Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The EngD is a four-year programme, placing emphasis on research within an industrial context. Students (known as Research Engineers) combine a research project, based with a UK sponsoring company, with accredited technical and business training. It is designed to appeal to ambitious and able graduates who aspire to managerial positions in industry.
iSLI’s EngD in System Level Integration is a collaboration of the UK electronics industry and the universities of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Heriot-Watt and Strathclyde. Successful students graduate with a joint degree of the four universities. iSLI invites new graduates, and working engineers with experience who are seeking a new challenge. Please contact the EngD Centre Manager, for further information.
Research Excellence
The university departments involved with iSLI were highly rated in the latest Research Assessment Exercise (RAE2001), with excellent reputations for research (5 or 5*). iSLI also benefits from an excellent relationship with industry, as a result of which it is able to secure access to leading edge design tools, state-of-the-art IP, industrial design platforms and development systems.
Student Facilities
iSLI provides an innovative approach to post-graduate education. Unlike traditional universities, iSLI is setup like a company and is situated in a business campus surrounded by electronic design companies, within the building and campus itself. Each student has his/her own desk and computer facilities as he/she would have working in a design company. All students have access to industry-standard tools and electronic databases to support all taught coursework. New graduates will gain much from this working environment. iSLI also has its own library, providing access to textbooks, journals.
