Investing in student experience The
University of Portsmouth has approximately 20,000
students, 2,500 of whom are international and
come from as many as 80 different countries.
Over the past 10 years the University has spent
£100 million on improving its buildings
and facilities, including new halls of residence,
sports facilities, the student’s Union
and many new teaching buildings. The new £6.2
million Students’ Union acts as a base
for approximately 125 clubs and societies. A
major extension to the library is currently
under way, which will be opening in 2006. The
University endeavours to continuously provide
the best for our students and offer value for
money.
Location
Portsmouth itself is an island
city in the centre of England’s Southern
coastline and has been described as “England’s
Flagship City” – a reference to
its long and interesting history as an important
maritime centre. The University has two campuses
by the sea – Langstone and Guildhall.
Most of the University teaching buildings are
located on the Guildhall campus and within 10
minutes walking distance from one another. Road
and rail links are excellent, providing good
access to London, Heathrow and Gatwick international
airports. Regular ferry services link Portsmouth
to France and Spain. The city boasts many excellent
facilities including leisure centres, tennis
courts, golf courses and sailing and windsurfing.
Facilities
From a brand new sports hall to
state of the arts computing facilities, the
university has everything you need in order
to study and enjoy your time once you are here.
The University has a large number of PCs in
several locations around the campus with extensive
computer facilities within the faculties and
departments. These high specification PCs and
MACs run the latest software for specialist
and general computing. You can also access the
University network on campus using your own
laptop with the University wireless local area
network (LAN). There are music and drama facilities
for those students who are keen to continue
their musical talents. There are two sports
hall on the Guildhall campus one, which has
recently been refurbished, and one that only
opened in 2003. The centres cater for all different
sports, indoor and outdoor. There are sports
clubs that students can join and represent the
University in local leagues. The University
library houses thousands of books and journals
with workspaces for students to use laptops
or study quietly. Students also have access
to electronic database and a subject librarian.
Network of Support
At the University of Portsmouth
we pride ourselves on welcoming and supporting
all our students. The International Recruitment
Office team are dedicated to providing consistent
care for the University’s International
Student. Our international Student Advisors
take pastoral care of International and EU students
and provide advice on any issues students wish
to discuss. The University’s support network
includes Student Housing, Careers and Development
Service, Student Finance Centre, Academic Registry,
Finance Department and the Student’s Union.
Student housing are available for students to
discuss issues on halls of residence, private
accommodation and lodgings. The University also
has a team of Chaplains who respect and value
each student, whatever their spiritual convictions
and are willing to listen and advise.
