The
Department of Law.
Law
is one of the leading Departments within Oxford
Brookes, since 1990 growing to become one of the
largest Departments, and one of the most successful
in terms of external recognition. In 1998 we received
the highest "Excellent" rating from
the TQA. In 2001 we received a "4" rating
from HFCE for our research, indicating a healthy
mix of national and international quality research.
Members of the Department have carried out research
and consultancy for the ESRC, the Manx Government,
and the Welsh Assembly, as well as for local councils
and police forces. We have provided a United Kingdom
base for scholars funded by the British Council,
the Rhodes Trust, and the Leverhulme Trust; as
well as members of the legal professions, and
leading policy makers in the police and other
governmental bodies. [Box comment: "
exemplary in providing both discrete skills based
modules and ensuring that substantive law courses
engender appropriate and valuable academic skills"]

Undergraduate
study at the Department of Law.
We offer two main undergraduate
programmes, both capable of leading to a Qualifying
Law
Degree recognised by the Law Society and the Bar
Council. Our LL.B. (Hons.) degree is intended
for students who wish to enter legal practice,
combining the fundamental subjects of English
and European Law with a wide variety of options.
Our B.A/B.Sc. Combined Studies degree is intended
for students who wish to combine law with another
subject, such as Business Studies, Psychology,
or advanced study of a foreign language. Students
can focus primarily on law (and gain a Qualifying
Law Degree allowing them to continue their education
into the legal professions) or can emphasise their
other subject, focussing their legal studies on
courses relevant to their intended careers. [Box
comment: "As a mature student I found the
Law Department, and
Brookes as a whole, very supportive. I now know
how much I rate Brookes, because of how much I
miss it!"]

Postgraduate
study at the Department of Law.
Many
students of other disciplines, recently graduated
or seeking a career change, enter the legal profession
through a one year conversion course, the CPE/Diploma
in Law. The CPE/Diploma in Law allows graduates
to study the foundations of English law in an
intensive, one year course, before moving onto
vocational training. Oxford Brookes University
is a partner with the University
of Oxford in delivering high legal professional
legal education at the Oxford Institute of Legal
Practice, and in 2002 the majority of the 90 students
on this programme had been accepted to continue
their studies in the Legal Practice Course at
the Institute.
The Department also hosts a
family of LL.M. degrees. The LL.M. in Private
International Law focuses on issues of private,
economic, and commercial concern in the international
field, including International Trade, International
Banking Law, and International Labour Law. The
LL.M. in Public International Law focuses on issues
of individual and State concern, including International
Human Rights Law, and Environmental Law. Students
may also join the programme taking a mix of options
from both pathways, graduating with a LL.M. in
International Law. In 2002, 50 students were studying
on the LL.M. programmes, including students from
South Korea, Zimbabwe, France, Jordan, India,
and Pakistan.
We also provide supervision
for Ph.D./M.Phil. research in topics falling within
our research expertise. Research students on these
programmes are associate members of the Centre
for Legal Research and Policy Studies, which also
hosts a Visiting Scholar programme, runs regular
conferences and seminar series, and provides a
base for our externally funded research projects.
[Box comment: "A very smoothly administered
programme"]

The
KDU/Brookes Programme.
In November 2000, Brookes
entered into a partnership with KDU College,
Malaysia, to jointly provide a LL.B. (Hons.)
degree programme leading to an English Qualifying
Law Degree. For the first two years of the programme,
students study the foundation subjects of English
law at the KDU campus. The KDU programme is
validated by us, and our staff act as external
examiners on the programme to ensure it is the
best possible preparation for study with us.
Students who successfully
complete the programme of study at KDU are guaranteed
entry into the final year of the LL.B. (Hons.)
programme at Brookes, and a substantial discount
to the
normal tuition fees. In their final year, students
come to live and study in Oxford, concentrating
on advanced optional subjects such as Crime
and Society; International Law and Institutions;
International Human Rights Law; Sexuality and
the Law; Environmental Law; European Union Social
Policy and Law; Employment Law; Discrimination
Law; Welfare Law; International Trade Law; Legal
Practice; Evidence; and Commercial Law. Although
fully integrated into the LL.B. (Hons.) programme,
in Oxford. Their studies are under the supervision
of the KDU Tutor, and they will be assigned
a third year student with experience of Oxford
to act as a mentor, and have the opportunity
to get involved in special
events aimed at their cohort.
