When one thinks of business in the United States of
America, many distinctive images probably come to
mind, and with good reason. America's business sector
is made up of several different types of companies.
There
are huge corporations, with main offices in cities like
New York City or Los Angeles and with smaller branches
all over the world. There are moderately sized companies
with simple beginnings, like a restaurant company that
was started out of someone's house and eventually became
a chain of food stores. There are also small businesses
found on every main street in America, selling everything
from jewellery to books to toys.
If
you choose to come to America to study business, you
will learn about each of these types of companies and
everything in-between.
Business
study in America is broad, yet your focus can be narrowed.
For example, if you are interested in numbers and figures,
nearly every college or university offers an accounting
program. Many accountant work for large companies, and
just as many open their own businesses and serve clients
on an individual basis. Some people prefer marketing
or public relations and this focus of study is widespread
throughout America as well. People use their marketing
degree to work with a larger company and are usually
responsible for advertising and public relations. Still
other people focus on the management aspect of business.
Graduating from an American university with a business
management degree allows you to do everything from organizing
a business and understanding employee behaviour to managing
the overall operations of a company. Whatever you want
to do in the business world, studying in the United
States of America will give you the most of your degree.
Once you have decided what area of business to study,
you can specialize your focus even more.
America
is unique in that each region of the country is known
for a particular product or service due to geography,
population and demographics. Businesses and companies
in those regions are often involved in that product
or service. For example, the Great Plains region of
the U.S is the agricultural centre of the country. Many
large farms and agricultural equipment companies are
located in Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma and other midwestern
states. Silicon Valley in California is known as America's
technological centre, so many computer companies are
based there. The Northeastern portion of the country
is the industrial area of the nation. Big automakers
like Ford, Chevrolet and Chrysler got their start in
Michigan and then branched out into other parts of the
country.
The
South-eastern United states are still mostly rural,
so goods like tobacco, oranges, cotton and other crops
are produced there in great quantities. Textile mills
are also numerous in the South, where they produce fabrics
such as the denim used for Levi Strauss jeans. However,
the South also has large metropolis areas such as Atlanta
and New Orleans, where major companies like Coca-Cola
and United Parcel Service (UPS) are headquartered. The
Mid-Atlantic States, which were among the first to be
settled in the New World, rely heavily on tourism and
the historical significance of their region to influence
their economic growth. The banking and commerce industry
is dominant throughout the country, particularly in
the mid-Atlantic.
Once
you have decided to study business in America, there
are many things you should look for as you search for
a college. First and foremost, you should decide which
area of business you want to study. You should look
for colleges that have strong business curriculum, particularly
in your area of interest. Many colleges and universities
in America are known for certain subjects - even though
they may offer many course programs, it is best to find
one that is strong in the business field.
Another
important feature is to consider how technologically
advanced a particular college is. Computers are becoming
increasingly more important - especially with the growth
of the Internet and the continued advancement of the
global marketplace. Knowledge of computers is essential
for today's job seeker, so a college that offers extensive
computer courses and offers students use of the computers
outside of class is sure to be a good decision. Other
features to consider are the cost of attending along
with what types of scholarships and financial aid is
available and the reputation of the college in the community.
If
you choose to study business in the United States, you
can be sure that you will earn a valuable education
by mastering skills that will always be in demand.
