To Study Civil Engineering?

Within the UK there is a very high number of universities and higher education colleges offering civil engineering degrees. They are evenly spread across the country with no particular location having the lion's share of educational establishments. For the chinese student, therefore, it should be possible to identify a required location within the UK and find a good quality university or college offering the sort of course required.

Each university offers core civil engineering courses, many of which are approved by the Joint Board of Moderators and the Joint Accreditation Panel on behalf of the professional institutions as giving the educational base to become a Chartered Engineer, Incorporated Engineer or Engineering Technician. Many accredited courses combine civil engineering with other relevant topics such as architecture or European languages and the initial opportunity for selection is therefore fairly wide. Coupled with this, universities and colleges employ tutors of the highest calibre to ensure every student is given quality tuition at very good student to tutor ratios.

Beyond the award of first degrees there are numerous opportunities for students to go on to higher degrees covering a wide range of subjects. Such second degrees may be obtained by tuition, by research or by a combination of the two. These degrees often provide the springboard for students to move into interesting positions in industry or to take up lecturing in academia. For the chinese students, besides there being great emphasis on the engineering content, there is also a need to enhance the quality of communication in the English language in which all examinations are conducted. The opportunity therefore to emerge as a well rounded engineering graduate with additional language skills is considerable.

Most universities provide substantial support to students with special efforts being made to ensure that those coming from overseas locations are not disadvantaged because of their origins. Such support extends to advice on accommodation, financial problems or how to obtain the best from the tuition available. Tutors, many of whom themselves have come from other countries, have much experience in these aspects of university life.

On the social side of life in UK universities there is much to interest the international student. Numerous societies and sports clubs exist and new members are made welcome, there are also frequent opportunities to take up non-paid administrative positions within these clubs and societies. Involvement of this nature provides experience of management at an early stage in the career of the young engineer.

Studying towards the award of an accredited civil engineering degree ensures that progression towards becoming a Corporate Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and a Chartered Engineer designated by the Engineering Council becomes a real prospect. Both of these professional qualifications are internationally recognised and enable holders to practise in most countries.
