Each of Australia's 38 universities offer courses and conducts research in a wide range of professional and academic disciplines. Qualifications awarded include associate diplomas, diplomas, bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees, and postgraduate diplomas. Universities recognise the qualifications of each other, and a degree program of another. The academic year runs from February to November, although many institutions accept enrolments in mid-year to accommodate international student needs.

Fluency in the English language is a necessity to succeed on an Australian campus, and most universities offer courses to help the Chinese student in English language preparation, particularly ELICOS (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students)
